Last year at Colorado Art Education Associations conference, I attended Portia Munson's master workshop. Portia creates these amazing photos by using a scanner. Portia is very inspirational. I was instantly interested in the idea of using a scanner in my classroom. I knew it would be a great technology integration lesson. Find more of Portia's artwork here.
Initially, my students had a demonstration on the scanner using drawings. This particular class likes my curiosity bin so I thought it was great opportunity to instruct a small group on scanning items. They learned how to place items on the scanner with the intention of creating symmetry, balance, and/or pattern. The students also learned how to save, edit, and move images on the computer. I did not demonstrate how to manipulate the light on the scanner. I think that will be our next class demonstration by just using boxes over the scanner to darken the image background.
