Stop motion is not officially open yet but I did offer it to 4th & 5th graders. The all have experience and it is a good time to practice with it. Here are some of the results.
I have been working on integrating technology into a TAB environment. The goal is for my students to be as independent as possible so that they can have more choice. When I started this plan I knew that small steps in scaffolding were going to be crucial to meet that goal.
I decided to start with basic drawing and painting apps for the students to use. I plan to use this for a month until I introduce a new skill or apps to them. I have had great success with Sketchbook Express on the iPads and Tayasui Sketches on the Macs. There are less buttons and choices for the students. The icons are easy to read and understand. I took a break from opening centers this week to complete our school art fundraiser. It's an easy self portrait lesson. I give a quick demo on how to draw a face big. I like how the students personalities shine through. Plus, if parent have bought items from each year they will have a set of self portraits from their child. I have my sons magnets pictured below. The are from kindergarten-2nd grade. I like see how much he has changed each year.
I have used Art to Remember for over five years with this fundraiser. They are amazing. The customer service and care are wonderful.
i continue to do this fundraiser because it is worth my time and work. The extra funds help buy clay.
Here is my advice about fundraiser to other art educators.
1) If you are stepping into a position, find out how much participation there has been in the past. It'll help you decide my next question.
2) Is it worth your time? You spent class time making these with your students, weekends labeling and sorting art, after school run to the post office, and counting money to deposit. Is it all worth time? Are you getting enough return? If it's not, maybe ask for donation instead.
Here is a look at week two. I open some centers by using the Studio Habit of Mind: Stretch & Explore. This is what my objective looks like.
Know: Exploratory Art
Understand: how artist use Stretch & Explore to make Exploratory Art.
Be Able To: create exploratory art in drawing, collage and digital art.
I will slowly open all the center by doing this. Then, I will shut them down and reopen by implementing Develop Craft to work on skills.
Here's an overview of week 1. Students were asked to answer some essential questions.
k-2:What is art?
3-5: What is art? What is art for? What is an artist? Why is art important?
I use these as a pre-assessment for the year. I have k-2 draw a picture and discuss as a class. 3-5 writes an answer on posters, then I ask them to draw a picture of anything they like. I ask them to define a purpose to their drawing. I use this as their pre-assessment. My goal is to have them defining a purpose (types of art) and meaning to their art.

I will open 3 centers next week by using the SHoM: Stretch & Explore as an objective.
Here is my single point SHoM rubric. I use it two-three times a year with 4-5th grade. I try to get them to write a sentence to explain each side. I did not require them to fill out the whole paper, but to focus on 2-3 habits instead. I have a blank box for the grade near the bottom. I tell them to put the grade they think they deserve. I will conference with them sometimes over these. I have 120-130 students that complete these making it hard to find time to conference with each student.
